Why Microneedling With PRP Is the Hottest Trend in Facial Rejuvenation

Medical science continues to research and improve nonsurgical treatment options designed to erase fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the appearance of scars, tone and lift sagging skin, and otherwise decrease the appearance of aging.

The good news? Many of these treatments work as promised when delivered by expertly trained skin care professionals.

The bad news? Chemical peels, laser peels, and a wide variety of other facial rejuvenation treatments can leave you hurting and hiding out at home while your skin heals.

George Speace, MD, is a board-certified and award-winning aesthetic surgeon who leads the team here at Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

As a well-respected surgeon and skin care expert, Dr. Speace is committed to providing truly effective facial rejuvenation treatments. He’s also passionate about sparing you unnecessary discomfort and lengthy healing times whenever possible.

That’s why Dr. Speace often encourages his patients to learn more about the benefits of microneedling with PRP.

What is microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) combines two treatments that are clinically proven to stimulate natural collagen production and improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and other skin flaws.

How it works

Microneedling and PRP therapy can be used independently of one another. Both offer impressive results in reducing the effects of aging on facial skin. Combining the two-in-one treatment can bring results to the next level.

During a microneedling treatment, your skin care expert uses an instrument fitted with multiple tiny needles to create numerous microscopic wounds in the targeted skin. The injuries trigger your body’s natural healing response. This stimulates increased production of collagen and growth factors to repair and rebuild the skin tissue in the treatment area.

Sounds painful, but it’s not. At Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons, we use the Eclipse MicroPen® for microneedling treatments. This medical-grade device has improved precision and control compared to standard dermal rollers, providing more consistent results with less patient discomfort.

The instrument glides gently across your skin, the needles are quite small, and the process is very fast. Most people report it feels about the same as lightly wiping your face with a rough cloth. You’re left with a little redness that may linger for a day or so, but the micro-punctures typically close within 10-15 minutes.

PRP contains numerous natural growth factors and other substances that stimulate collagen production and wound healing. We obtain the platelet-rich plasma from a sample of your blood, about the same amount that’s withdrawn when you have certain labs. We then spin the blood sample very quickly in a centrifuge machine to separate the PRP from other blood components.

PRP can be delivered via an injection and is often used by surgeons, dentists, and other physicians to speed wound healing.

For microneedling, we create a PRP serum that we spread across the treatment area before applying the MicroPen. We’ve found that combining these treatments significantly improves the overall results and greatly increases patient satisfaction.
